1. Huawei donates operating system to Chinese tech non-profit
Huawei Technologies Co Ltd has donated its proprietary open-source operating system (OS) to a non-profit public organization it co-founded last year, with the aim of increasing the use of the OS by encouraging external software developers to use it in their products.

The openEuler source code, along with related assets such as verified software packages, trademarks, and community infrastructure, have been donated to the OpenAtom Foundation, a non-governmental organization. OpenAtom was created by tech giants including Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., Tencent Holdings Ltd., and Baidu Inc., as well as Huawei itself in September 2020.

Speaking at an industry summit on Tuesday where the donation was announced, Deng Taihua, president of Huawei's computing product line, told reporters that the move was aimed at encouraging open-source software developers from various industries to "make greater contributions to building the openEuler OS ecosystem."

“Huawei’s ultimate goal is to achieve full interoperability between oman telegram number database terminal devices running the Harmony OS and digital infrastructure platforms equipped with the openEuler OS, enhancing user experience across all application scenarios, ” Deng added.

Faced with US sanctions that restrict access to core components and software built using American technology, Huawei introduced Harmony OS in 2019 to replace Google's Android OS on a wide range of connected devices, including mobile phones, home appliances, cars and even drones.

In October, the Shenzhen giant said Harmony OS had reached more than 150 million devices from smartphones to tablets and smart speakers, as it aims to grow that number to 200 million by the end of this year.

Deng also said Huawei aims to bring openEuler OS, which has attracted nearly 10,000 developers since its open-source inception, to the global stage starting in 2022, a goal that comes at a time when many Chinese enterprises are doubling down on building their own software ecosystems to challenge the dominance of Apple's closed-source iOS and open-source Android OS.
